Hands On Quadrilaterals!
We are in our GEOMETRY unit in 2nd grade. It is amazing to see the level of engagement in the kiddos when it relates to shapes. They love it!
Today we had a discussion titled "What is a Quadrilateral?" The students began to make connections between shapes and use the vocabulary when discussing small and whole group.
Our favorite debate is whether or not rectangles are squares or if squares are rectangles. We had very good arguments from both end, but came to the conclusion that when drawing squares, all sides must be the same size/ length. So, squares can be rectangles, but rectangles cannot be squares. I was so proud!
Taking our lesson even further, I wrote the word "parallelogram" on the board and asked students if they knew what the word meant. Crickets.....I expected this! I drew a T chart labeled "Parallelogram" and "Non Parallelograms" and began drawing different shapes that categorized under each topic. Finally, one student began discussing the way the lines were angled. I finally had my lead in!
It turned out to be a fabulous discussion about different quadrilaterals and why they can be categorized as such. To ensure they knew and that I knew they knew, we made quadrilaterals using pipe cleaners! Such a fun, interactive, and engaging approach to 2-D shapes and four-sided figures.
