3-D Shape Museum

3-D Shape Museum

After two engaging weeks, I am sad to see our 3-D Shape Museum come to a close. Introducing 3-D shapes seemed to engage each and every 2nd grade without question.
Their favorite was I-Spy with 3-D shapes. Each student took turns trying to trick the rest of the class in finding 3-D shapes around the classroom. They used their knowledge and vocabulary that we had been discussing in class to make clues or find the answer. Once a person found the shape, they had to justify WHY they believed it was the Mystery Shape.
Once we played this game, I knew almost all of the students understood how to investigate 3-D shapes and find them in real-world experiences. I assigned an optional and fun assignment, where students recorded different 3-D shapes in their house. I told them to think beyond the typical ones that we have already discussed in class (traffic cone, basketball, water bottle, ice cream cone, etc.) I was very impressed by how creative some of the students were in finding different 3-D objects around their house.
We even extended it and set up a 3-D Shape Museum. With permission from parents/ guardians, each student was allowed to bring in a 3-D object they found in their home. Once they brought it to school, they filled out an "Exhibit Plaque" describing what the object is and what 3-D shape it holds. Each student presented it in front of the class and got an extra reward of Classroom Coyote Cash!
It was very thrilling to watch the students take ownership of their learning at school and at home.
The entire class is sad to see our Museum come down, but we are ready to move on our Shape Experts! Below is a photo of a few Exhibits in our Museum.
